Private James Kane

James Kane was born on 26 March 1900 in Ballintra, Drumholm, County Donegal, the fifth of eight children of Royal Irish Constabulary sergeant John Kane and his wife Sarah (née Spinks). Following John's retirement in 1906, the family moved to Belfast. At the time of the 1911 Census they were living at 174 Ravenhill Road.

Kane enlisted in the cavalry at Belfast on 23 April 1917 (No.35391). He was described as being 5' 7¾" tall, with a fresh complexion, dark brown hair and blue eyes. He gave his occupation as a clerk.

Initially posted to a reserve cavalry regiment (probably the 5th Reserve at Tidworth), at some point in 1917 or 1918 he was posted to the North Irish Horse reserve at Antrim.

Kane was reported to have deserted from Antrim on 30 September 1918. It is not known if he was subsequentially apprehended.
